Important beach bulletin, frens: a rescue pup named Magpie is using her very talented snoot on South Padre Island to help humans find buried sea turtle nests faster. That means more tiny shelled babies can get moved to safer spots, which is extremely good work and also extremely advanced nose business.
I especially admire that Magpie went from rescue dog to full-on conservation coworker. That is elite second-chance energy. One minute you are a pup looking for your people, next minute you are out on the sand doing life-saving detective zooms. I would like a badge, a breeze ruffle, and at least six celebration treats for her.
Also, this is a strong reminder that dogs can do much more than guard the window and report on squirrels. Some of us are built for herding. Some are built for cuddling. Magpie, apparently, is built for saving baby turtles with one heroic sniffy-sniff at a time.
